About Small Stove Fuel

Small Stove Fuel — Backpacking Canisters & Cartridges

Isobutane-propane fuel canisters for backpacking stoves in 100g, 230g, and 450g sizes. Always have a full canister — because fuel is the one thing you can't improvise in the field, and a dead stove means cold meals and untreated water.

Canister sizing for trip length

  • 100g: overnight trips, one or two boils per day
  • 230g: weekend trips, 2-3 day expeditions for solo use
  • 450g: week-long trips or group cooking

Cold-weather fuel considerations

Isobutane-propane mixes perform better in cold than pure butane (which stops flowing below ~32°F). Look for cold-weather rated blends if you're cooking in shoulder seasons or winter. For true cold, multi-fuel stoves running white gas work better than canister stoves regardless of fuel rating.

Pair with stoves and cooking gear

Fuel works alongside the stoves it powers. See Stoves & Accessories for the broader category, Optimus for canister-compatible stoves, Cookware & Dinnerware for pots and pans, and Camp Kitchen for the broader cooking category.

Carry enough. Test before the trip. Cook well, anywhere.
