About Axes & Hatchets

Axes & Hatchets for Camp, Bushcraft & Field Use

A good axe is a tool you'll keep for decades. Compact hatchets for splitting kindling, full-size camp axes for heavier work, and bushcraft-specific designs for shelter building and processing — heat-treated steel and solid handles built to take real field abuse.

Pick the right size

Hatchets (12–14" handle) ride on a pack or belt for trail use — quick splitting, light limb processing. Three-quarter axes (24–26") balance portability with chopping power for camp. Full-size axes (28–36") are car-camp territory — maximum work, maximum weight.

Steel and handle matter

Forged high-carbon steel holds an edge through hard use; cheap stainless dulls fast. Hickory handles flex with impact, fiberglass handles resist abuse but transmit shock. Pick the combination that matches how you'll use it — and learn to maintain both.

Pair with cutting tools

Axes work alongside other cutting tools in a complete bushcraft system. See Knives for finer cutting work, Axes & Saws for the broader category, and Sharpeners for maintaining edges.

One good axe outlasts a dozen cheap ones.
