Insect Repellents for Camp & Field Use
Protect yourself from bugs, ticks, and mosquitoes on the trail and at camp. DEET and DEET-free options for extended outdoor use — particularly in heavy-insect environments where mistakes mean disease exposure, not just discomfort.
DEET vs. picaridin vs. natural
DEET remains the most-tested and most-effective repellent — works against the broadest range of insects, lasts longest, but degrades plastics and some synthetic fabrics. Picaridin offers similar effectiveness without the fabric issues. Natural options (lemon eucalyptus, citronella) work in lighter exposure environments but require more frequent application.
Beyond personal repellents
Permethrin-treated clothing kills ticks and mosquitoes on contact — apply to outer layers, dries fast, lasts through 5–6 washes. Combined with skin-applied repellent, this two-layer approach gives the strongest protection in heavy insect zones.
Pair with the trail kit
Insect repellents fit into broader outdoor preparedness. See Hygiene & Sanitation for related gear and Trail Gear for the broader category.
Bugs are the smallest threat that wrecks the biggest trips.
