Filtration types
Hollow-fiber (Sawyer) — 0.1 micron, removes bacteria and protozoa, 100,000+ gallon lifespan. Press-purifier (GRAYL) — handles bacteria, viruses, and chemicals via integrated filter cartridge. Match the filter to the water
Backcountry streams need bacteria and protozoa removal. Hotel-tap and well water need viral protection too. International travel may need the full chemical/viral spectrum. Match the filter to your dirtiest realistic source — overspecifying is fine, underspecifying isn't.
