About Signal Tools

Signal Tools — Whistles, Mirrors, Lights, and Beacons

When you're lost, hurt, or otherwise need to be found, signaling becomes the most important function in your kit. SRO's Signal Tools collection covers whistles, signal mirrors, chemical lights, Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs), and the audio/visual gear that gets you noticed.

The signal hierarchy

Audio (whistles) — heard up to half a mile. Visual day (signal mirrors) — visible to aircraft at miles of distance. Visual night (chemical lights, strobe flashlights, tritium markers). Electronic (PLBs, satellite messengers) — global rescue activation. Each layer has a use case where the others fail. See Navigation & Signaling for the broader nav-and-signal lineup.

Brands at the signal layer

All-Weather Storm Whistles (118-120 dB, the loudest survival whistle on Earth, since 1988 in St. Louis). Signal mirrors from UST and military-spec sources. ACR ResQLink PLBs (since 1956 in Fort Lauderdale, used by NASA, Military, and Coast Guard). Pair with Compasses for orientation alongside signaling.

Pair with the broader kit

Signal tools belong in every survival kit alongside general survival gear, flashlights, and All First Aid.

Minimum signal kit: one Storm Whistle and one signal mirror. Two ounces total, fits anywhere, covers audio and daytime visual signaling. Add a PLB if you regularly venture beyond cell coverage.
