Paracord — Mil-Spec 550 and Specialty Cordage

Paracord is the most useful 6-ounce item in any kit. Type III 550 paracord — the mil-spec standard — handles 550 lbs of working load and unspools to expose seven inner strands for additional smaller-diameter use. SRO carries Atwood Rope MFG's full mil-spec lineup since 1985.

Paracord categories

550 paracord (Type III) — the standard, 550 lb breaking strength. 95-cord (micro) — same construction at smaller diameter for lighter applications. Why mil-spec matters

Mil-spec 550 paracord (manufactured to MIL-C-5040H Type III) guarantees 7 inner strands of nylon braided over a nylon sheath, with documented pull strength. Consumer paracord without mil-spec certification can vary widely in strength and inner strand count.

Minimum paracord kit: 25-50 ft of mil-spec 550 in every outdoor pack. Scale up by use case — bigger shelters need more cord, and micro cord covers fishing and lashing applications where 550 is overkill.
