About Fire Starting Tools & Supplies

Fire Starting Tools & Supplies — Ignition That Works When Wet

Fire is the foundation. Warmth, water purification, signaling, food prep, morale — every layer of survival depends on getting a flame started, often in conditions where matches won't light and lighters won't spark. SRO's Fire Starting collection covers the full ignition stack from tinder to torch.

Three layers of fire-starting kit

Serious users carry redundancy across three categories:

  • Primary igniters — ferro rods, magnesium strikers, mil-grade matches (Exotac, Grim Workshop, UST)
  • Tinder — wax-cotton plugs, Fire Plugs, Baddest Bee fuses, char cloth (Three Rivers Firestarters, Epiphany Outdoor)
  • Backup torches — windproof lighters, blowpoke tools (Epiphany Pocket Bellows for oxygen-assist)

Match the kit to conditions

Wet weather, high wind, and freezing cold each defeat different ignition methods. Magnesium-block strikers work when matches don't. Pocket Bellows compress air to revive a struggling flame. Cold Weather Survival gear includes air-activated body warmers for when fire isn't an option at all.

Pair with the broader kit

Fire-starting connects to stoves and fuel for cooking and warmth, broader survival tools for the working layer, and emergency food for the meals you'll eventually cook. Always carry two ignition methods minimum.

New to building a fire kit? Start with one ferro rod, one tinder pack, and one waterproof match container — three small items that cover ninety percent of realistic conditions.
