About Rite in the Rain

Rite in the Rain — All-Weather Paper Since 1916

Rite in the Rain started in 1916 when printer Jerry L. Darling was asked by a Pacific Northwest lumber company to find a better way to record logging data in constant rain. The first all-weather paper formula was patented in 1917. More than a century later, every notebook still comes off the line in Tacoma, Washington.

Paper that survives the trip

The waterproof paper coating means writing survives rain, sweat, mud, and submersion. Roughly one-third of sales go to the U.S. military; the rest serves surveyors, first responders, hunters, and anyone who needs writing to survive the weather. See the dedicated Pens, Pencils, Notepads collection for the full lineup.

Pair with field kit

Trip logs, route notes, repair records, and emergency contact lists — paired with Survival Tools, Navigation, and All-Weather Writing Gear.

Every serious field kit should have a small Rite in the Rain notebook and a pencil. Knowledge written down beats memory every time — and the paper survives every condition you'll encounter.
